FRIDAY July 4 2014 Issue 1067

Key to Beachlands School The poorly kept secret as to the identity of the VIP attending Beachlands school on Thursday was revealed when Prime Minister John Key arrived. Accompanied by retiring Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutchison and National candidate Andrew Bayly, Mr Key made a brief, well-received visit to the school hall, packed with kids, teachers and parents. After an introduction by the school choir including soloist Alex Phillips and guitarist Joe Jones, principal Brian Gower introduced the visitors and said the Prime Minister’s visit was a great reminder of the school’s core values as written in 2008. He read from the Leadership section, about integrity: “I follow through on actions I have agreed to take, I can deal with any issues that arise positively and know when to take action. I have a can-do attidude and strive to be the best I can,” said Brian Gower, before asking Mr Key to take the floor. The Prime Minister started by telling the students a little about his family, including a cat called Moonbeam Smoky Fluffy Key, having been given one name by each member of his family. He then told a story about a boy who swam across a pool of crocodiles to win either $1 million or marriage to a young lady. Mr Key highlighted the value of the determination to swim across the pool, regardless of the revelation that the boy had not been motivated by either goal, just to find out who had pushed him in! He then surprised the audience by taking questions from the students, which were kicked off by matter of fact eight-year-old Libby Underwood who wanted to know: “What do you have to do?” His reply was that Government makes rules that help parents and teachers keep things going. And in a gentle introduction to taxation, he explained that Government thinks carefully about how to wisely spend the money that people give them. The students did not hold back after that, asking: How does it feel to be Prime Minister? Is Washington DC in Wellington? Have you made any new rules? Do you prefer day or night? What is your favourite colour? Mr Key acknowledged that politically his favourite colour should be blue, but actually it was yellow. The question that most inspired the Prime Minister, and the audience was “Do you go to bed in a suit?” After some laughter he replied, “Well you don’t really want to know what I wear to bed. Okay, I wear pyjamas.” When asked: What did you want to do when you were younger?” Mr Key conceded that at about age 12 he had wanted to be Prime Minister, but decided to become a businessman first.

Prime Minister John Key signs autographs during his visit to Beachlands School.

Hunua ‘National stronghold’ Armageddon is more likely to hit the Hunua electorate than National losing it at this year’s election, according to Prime Minister John Key. In a function at the Maraetai Beach Boating Club last Thursday, Mr Key spoke to a group of invited guests representing a wide cross section of the community from Maraetai, Beachlands, Whitford, Kawakawa Bay and Clevedon. It was part of a one day whistlestop tour of the Hunua Electorate. During a 60 minute speech, Mr Key pointed to the Hunua electorate as one of National’s strongholds, thanked

retiring MP Dr Paul Hutchison for “an amazing contribution over 15 years,” and welcomed new candidate Andrew Bayly. Mr Key outlined some of his Government’s successes, touching on economic and social issues, focusing on “balancing the books.” He said National’s

campaign could focus more on environmental issues, claiming New Zealand’s air was cleaner now than at any other time in his 52 years. This was partially due to the removal of sulphur from fuel and that water quality was improving thanks to ini• TO PAGE 3

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (July 4th 2014)

John Key back again... THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz

Prime Minister John Key is becoming a regular visitor to the Pohutukawa Coast. For well over 10 years we never saw or heard from a sitting PM but now we have had a visit from John Key twice in as many election campaigns. Although we do have to give credit to Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark for setting the trend when she attended Maraetai Beach School’s 100th centenary back in 2006. However, that wasn’t a political visit and she went out of her way to not talk politics. Not so John Key. His visits are most definitely all about politics. During the 2011 campaign he held a public meeting at Te Puru where he outlined policy and took questions

from local residents. Last week’s visit was a little more low key (if you’ll pardon the pun) but his visit to Beachlands School was still well attended as was the invitation only function at the Maraetai Beach Boating Club. So why the sudden interest in this district from our nation’s leader? The answer can be summed up in just three letters: MMP. The Hunua Electorate - apart from a brief period when it became part of Manukau East - has always been a safe National seat. Under the First Past the Post system it became a political backwater. National was always going to win no matter how dramatic the swing of the political pendulum. And Labour wasn’t about to expend too much energy challenging that. But now politics is all about getting the party vote and for that reason the Hunua Electorate is no longer irrelevant. It takes on new importance for the National Party because

votes out here now count. This coming election may be closer than people realise, especially if National fails to lock in any credible coalition partners. Getting the party faithful to vote is essential to National’s cause. What better place to campaign for a strong party vote than somewhere that’s already a strong National power base…such as Hunua. National’s new candidate for the electorate, Andrew Bayly, certainly isn’t taking it for granted and is already campaigning very hard and going to a lot of effort to raise his profile in the Clevedon-Pohutukawa Coast District. His party will have no doubt that he will win the electorate by a comfortable margin but, I’m sure, he is also under pressure to ensure as many voters as possible tick “National” in both boxes. John Key’s visit last week will have been designed to aid that cause.

Zealandia bosses meet with Clevedon residents Clevedon residents and Zealandia Nurseries are now talking with each other – but some members of the community believe it is too late. Zealandia already has resource consent to build greenhouses on a former dairy farm in Tourist Road. The company is well into the building the

first stage of 6.5 hectares of glasshouses, with the entire facility expected to be operational by the end of next March. A public meeting at the Clevedon Commuinity Hall last Friday afternoon attracted 30 interested parties, including Directors of Zealandia Graham Windross and

Vince Wylaars who presented on Zealandia’s other operations in Mount Wellington and Canterbury and their plans for Tourist Road. Councillor Bill Cashmore was present, but not at the meeting were Auckland City Council planners. This prompted some criticism, particu-

From the PC Times of July 2 1999: • A Pohutukawa Coast Motor Show is being planned as a fundraiser for the Te Puru sports complex. The motor show is the idea of Maraetai motoring writer Tim Nevinson. Tim, a former test engineer for Jaguar and Lotus, now runs his own motoring promotions company, Automotive Projects. • In the early hours of June 24, residents in the Whitford Rd – Mangemangeroa area were awoken by the sound of gunshots. It was later discovered that five shots at been fired at a real estate sign with a shotgun. • Formosa golf course superintendent Bruce Cooke has received a top award for the efforts he and his team put in for last year’s New Zealand Golf Open. The Beachlands resident looks after the country’s largest golf course at the Formosa Auckland Country Club, venue for last year’s golf Open.

Some discussion centred on the roofline orientation and cladding of the greenhouses. The rooflines will run northsouth, with diffuse glass on the sides and a retractable plastic roof. The driveway would be sealed and some safety floodlighting installed, but the glasshouses would not be lit up and there should be no noise from there or the workshop. When some at the meeting voiced objections to workers coming from outside the area, they were told that there would be some employment for Clevedon people in the future, with a possibility of some 9am

to 3pm shifts – a recruiting strategy the company used in Canterbury with great success. Vince Wyelaars promised to make personal visits to affected neighbours and Graham Windross described planting projects undertaken at their other sites. Scott Montgomery, a local farmer who has been a neighbour of the Zealandia nursery in Phillip Rd Alfriston, told the meeting of a positive relationship stretching back 30 years. When asked, both representatives from Zealandia agreed that communication had started much too late in the process and that they would like to correct this. Some immediate neighbours arranged personal visits to talk about screening planting. Clevedon Business Association chairperson (and Franklin Local Board member) Angela FullJames led the meeting to conclusion saying: “I am keen to see Zealandia integrate into the community in a number of ways.” In response Vince Wylaars described a project on the Styx River in Canterbury where Zealandia had provided 16,000 plants on 20 acres for the City Council. “We are in the business of landscape, we do a lot of community work, school gardens, community gardens.”

“becoming selective and wanted to start out in Grey Lynn, Parnell, Ponsonby or Maraetai.” When questioned about the fairness of the MMP system Mr Key drew comparisons with the United Kingdom where his “good friend” David Cameron faced losing despite holding a majority vote, thanks to the electoral system. A joke about dictator-

ship being his favoured electoral system was well greeted by the audience who also responded well to Mr Key’s impassioned entreaty for a four year electoral term. Nationan’s candidate for Hunua, Andrew Bayly, told the PC Times that Mr Key’s visit to the electorate was significant. “We deliberately invited the PM to come

across to the Beachlands and Maraetai for most of the afternoon given the importance I am placing on this part of the Hunua Electorate. “Unfortunately we had to limit the numbers due to the physical constraints but it was a great start in an ongoing conversation I would like to have with the community.”

He made a direct plea for Hunua citizens party votes, claiming that while National was ahead in the polls – including a TV3 poll released that night – “it is easy for us to sit back and say National is going to win; I don’t think Labour is going to catch us in 85 days. “The question is: can all the other parties on the Left gang up on us in 85 days? The answer is: absolutely they can... Winston, The Greens, Labour, Laila Harre, and a few other muppets.” Questions from the floor were varied, all directed at issues of national concern such as the Official Cash Rate, prostitution issues, immigration, 1080 poison, export opportunities for small businesses, skilled labour, income support, overseas property investors and skilled migrant workers. When former Franklin Lolcal Board member Jan Sinclair enquired about housing issues, Mr Key responded: “I really believe in the property owning democracy” and that the answer to the current shortage and pricing issues in Auckland and Christchurch lies in increasing supply. He also joked that the young home buyer was

PROPERTY WISE ON THE COAST Valuations set to move plus or minus 10% New Valuation notices will be sent to Auckland residents in early November. Auckland Council Valuation services team leader, Peter Mckay says “most Auckland property owners can expect to see their property's capital value move somewhere between plus or minus 10 per cent”. Valuations are based on sales in the area. The calculation includes reference to what properties are selling for in each neighbourhood, the type of property, changes to improvements made since the last valuation such as the addition of a room, swimming pool or garage, and information about industrial and commercial rental trends obtained from market surveys. Building consents granted for houses since their last valuation, such as for subdivision and extensions of a house would be taken into account. Beachlands and Maraetai of course have seen generous growth in sale prices which will no doubt be reflected. Individual property owners once they receive their new valuation will have until December 16 to object as it is used to set the annual rates. At long last the statistics tell us there has been a slow down in the number of sales transactions. It appears the interest rate hikes are starting to take effect in the residential property market. This goes to show that the official cash rate can be a powerful weapon against sky rocketing house prices. The good from this is that there seems to be a gradual easing in activity and the market is benefiting from a soft landing rather than a collapse as we have seen in the past. Long term the outlook looks good.

Helping hand for self defence Local martial arts and self defence instructor Charlie Riley approached the Pohutukawa Coast Helping Hand Trust (PCHHT) earlier this year seeking help to obtain training gear for free community based self-defense classes being held in Maraetai. With the encouragement of local resident Paul Gapes and Sir Graham Henry, Teamsports, the distributor of Adidas combat gear, has aided in supplying Charlie with focus mitts and kick pads Charlie runs paid self defence and martial arts classes where students purchase their own gear to train with but he also gives his time freely to instruct other groups in the community. The supplied equipment will be used for this voluntary training. Charlie has been teaching reality-based self defence and martial arts (Kung Fu) in the local area for nearly 10 years, mainly for children. This year Charlie started doing community based street self

These courses were free of charge, spread over a 6 week period and open to everyone over the age of 14. He has also run another two community based courses in South Auckland, Panmure and Mt Wellington. Charlie is currently studying traditional boxing and Krav Maga (Combat Krav Maga). In August last year he became a registered ICS close quarters combat level one instructor. The three day intensive

course was conducted by ICS’s chief instructor Peter Sciarra. Also in the same month he became a Protect Self Defence accredited trainer (Level One). The course was conducted in Auckland by Protects director and chief instructor Phil Thompson. Pohutukawa Coast Helping Hand Trustees Simon Male and Garry Larsen say the Trust has a “from the community for the community” philosophy. Any donations made will stay local to assist people making a difference in

the community, as well disadvantaged people who may need a helping hand to get ahead. This is not only financially but also in a mentoring role If anyone in the community wishes to make a donation visit the website, www.pchelpinghandtrust.org or a donation can be made by cheque made payable to Pohutukawa Coast Helping Hand Trust and posted to PO Box 141, Beachlands, Auckland 2147, or direct deposit is 38-9015-0453206-01.

POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (July 4th 2014) 7

Win for soccer first team By Teri Doran Beachlands-Maraetai AFC soccer club’s first team beat Otahuhu 3-2 last Saturday in an all action thriller at Te Puru Park. The home team went from being 2-0 down at half-time, to go on and score three goals in the last 20 minutes and win the game in dramatic style. Otahuhu opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the game, and seconds into injury time in the first-half they doubled their lead. The second-half saw BMAFC play some good attacking football, with Otahuhu trying to get them on the break, but the home side just struggled to finish. With just 20 minutes to go BMAFC’s coach, Paul Stephens, surprised supporters when he pulled on the jersey and took to the park in an unprecedented move. He immediately made an impact, and scored BMAFC’s first goal, putting them very much back in the game. Stephens picked up the ball in midfield and weaved through the Otahuhu defence. He crossed to Luke Roycroft on the wing and continued his run. Roycroft made a beautiful cross back

over to Stephens, who blasted it home without hesitation. Just a minute later, and with five minutes left on the clock, a free-kick from Ants Schomaker sent the ball into the Otahuhu box. It was cleared by the defence, but only as far as Schomaker who sent it back towards the target. This time Eric Schlaffer got on the end of it, heading it into the net to even the scoring. In the dying minutes BMAFC looked determined to fight for the winner, and Otahuhu, who had thought they had the game all sewn up, started to look nervous. With two minutes left to play Otahuhu’s frustration boiled over when they had a player sent off after James Gibbs had been brought down by a foul. It all came down to the final seconds and almost the last kick-off the ball for the electrifying climax. Stephens showed the same magic he had earlier when he again picked up the ball and drilled it past the Otahuhu keeper for a dramatic finish to an action packed game that saw BMAFC claim the three points.

End of July deadline for dog registration Auckland’s 87,000 dog owners have until the end of July to register more than 100,000 dogs. Auckland Council’s Animal Management Manager Tracey Moore says dog registration is required by law to ensure councils have the information they need to help find wandering, lost or stolen dogs. “The most important reason for registering your dog is so if it goes missing or wanders off it is easier for us to reunite you. It also helps us keep track of dogs that have changed owners or districts,” she says.

Real people caring for real people

Bike club busy building new tracks The Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club is on a track building spree thanks to several funding injections and people-power at working bees. President Callum Wilson says the four year old club is going from strength to strength with increases in membership and funding, despite some riding restrictions due to the felling of pine trees in the WhitfordMaraetai Forest. The club has received funding from Pub Charity, Whitford Community Charitable Trust, Clevedon Medical Centre, Expedio Industrial Property, ASB Community Trust and the Franklin Local Board. Since the club started in 2010, it has enjoyed permitted access to the privately owned Whit-

ford and Maraetai forestry blocks, though Maraetai is now closed and off limits. Whitford is only accessible with a membership to the bike club, and parts are closed off while trees are being felled, and in some areas on Saturday mornings when the Whitford Archery club practices. The new funding has been allocated to professionally built tracks by the new Tim Hunter Trail Company. On June 22 club members also held a winter working bee, renovating the old Odens Track and another, Breadheads, to complement the professionally built trails. There is also a competitive element in the club with several junior members climbing the

Awards for Whitford Pony Club riders

- Experienced, qualified & caring professional staff - Chapels in Manurewa & Papakura with catering facilities - Pre-paid & pre-arranged funerals available - Continued care & support once the funeral is over

Whitford Pony Club riders have picked up three more awards at the recent Auckland District Pony Club’s annual prize giving, capping off a very successful season for the club. Georgina Forsyth (16) won a trophy for being the best senior Auckland rider at NZPCA Dressage Champs, her sister, Emelia Forsyth (14) won an award as the top junior rider at the same event and their

cousin Devon Prangley (18) received a trophy for being the top A1 rider at NZPCA Eventing Champs Trials. This success comes just after Whitford Pony Club won the Judith Carr Eventing Trophy for the fifth year in a row. The event is contested by Mangere, Meadowbank and St Helliers Pony Clubs – and produces some intense rivalry. Eventing is very much Whitford Pony Club’s forte- with the club having produced some outstanding young riders over the years.

This season, half of the entire Auckland champs team came from Whitford and they did well, coming second overall. While Lara ButlerGallie (11) was the top rider in the 13 years and under category in the Manukau Team ODE held at Clevedon. The next event on the Whitford Pony Club calendar is a “Mid-Winter Gymkhana” on Sunday July 10. This event has a “Disney theme” and is open to everyone. It’s aimed particularly at younger riders and should provide plenty of fun in the
